What is a teleidoscope?

VIEW THROUGH MY TELEIDOSCOPE

This is what it looks like through a teleidoscope!

It’s like a kaleidoscope without the beads or jewels at the end, so you actually see what you are looking at through the lense…at least that is how I explain what a teleidoscope (or taleidoscope) is, to curious onlookers when someone sees me gazing through mine at an art gallery, garden, or who knows where! Below are my collections of photographs, taken through my teleidoscope with nothing more than my phone. From flowers to vibrant patterns, I love to see how the world looks through the lens of the teleidoscope, and it serves as great inspiration for other creative projects.

Art in Bloom at the NCMA

Art in Bloom at the North Carolina Museum of Art is easily one of my favorite yearly activities in Raleigh. Each spring, floral designers from all over the state recreate a randomly assigned painting in a floral arrangement. The interpretations range from abstract to literal, and it is always inspiring!

Chinese Lantern Festival

Every year, the bright lights of the Chinese Lantern Festival in Cary, NC act as a great source of inspiration. It is so fun to walk among the glowing exhibits hidden between the trees and imagine what it looks like through the eyes of my children. We all like to take turns peering through the lens of my teleidoscope to see what fun patterns arise.

Patterns from the 2020 Orchid Show at the NYC Botanical Gardens

Imagine my delight when I found out that the theme of the 2020 NYC Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show was going to be “Kaleidoscope” by floral designer extraordinaire, Jeff Leatham. Since I was going to be in the area, I made sure to take my teleidoscope so I could experience the show in all of its glory. As I studied each orchid (as well as cacti and more), turning the scope to capture different patterns, I couldn’t help but be amazed at the results.
